Sen. Timilty and Rep. Galvin Advocate for Canton Police Funding

BOSTON (10/15/2020) — State Senator Walter F. Timilty (D-Milton) and State Representative William C. Galvin (D-Canton), together, filed a letter of support with the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (“MA DOR”), Division of Local Services, advocating for new mobile data terminals in Canton police cruisers.

The Town of Canton has applied for a $64,000 grant from the Community Compact Cabinet IT Grant through MA DOR to replace the outdated equipment.

“Maintaining critical data access, with rugged computers in the field, is a necessary tool for modern law enforcement agencies. This equipment will bring the department’s full range of data resources right into patrol cars,” said Timilty.

“Should the grant be awarded to Canton, the new, current hardware and software will help the police department be in compliance with Massachusetts Criminal Justice Information Services,” Timilty said. “The current equipment has run its course. Additionally, nearly 50 different police officers use this equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

This funding, if awarded to the Town of Canton, will provide for 10 new rugged computers and the required mounting hardware, software, 3-year warranty, and installation. The current equipment is outdated and is incapable of running the latest operating systems.

The Community Compact IT Grant Program is a competitive grant program to drive innovation and efficiency at the local level via investments in technology. Grants will support the implementation of innovative and transformative IT projects by funding one-time capital needs such as technology infrastructure, upgrades and/or purchases of equipment or software.
